Retirees: 5 Reasons to Choose Pittsburgh

When choosing a location for retirement, there are many important factors to consider, some that you might not have necessarily thought about when choosing a location for working or starting a family. And when starting to research that perfect retirement spot, you might notice that the city of Pittsburgh pops up quite a bit, even beating out cities in Florida, South Carolina, and California, for top places to retire. At first glance, it might seem surprising, but with the wealth of perks presented by this thriving city, it’s really no surprise that Pittsburgh is rated the #21 City to Retire by Forbes Magazine and #1 by Zippia.com. So, just what makes Pittsburgh such a great retirement community?

1. Low Cost of Living & Affordability

All else aside, might be one of the most important factors to consider in top retirement locations. After all, one of the downsides to retirement is decreased income, which means paying more attention to just how much living costs. Fortunately, the cost of living index for Pittsburgh falls 16% lower than the national average, with a median home price at just $140,000.

2. Rich Culture & Things to Do

Steeped in history and surrounded by top universities and colleges, Pittsburgh enjoys a strong sense of culture and plenty of unique attractions, districts, and cultural sites. From the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra to the Cathedral of Learning, Pittsburgh spans a true wealth of interests. Unique districts such as The South Side, The Waterfront, or The Strip District provide entertainment, restaurants, shops, and nightlife, while history buffs and art critics flock to the Warhol Museum or the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. And don’t forget about cheering on Pittsburgh’s four major-league sports teams!

3. Ways to Stay Active

Big-city living doesn’t have to mean all skyscrapers and sidewalks. Pittsburgh offers plenty of interesting ways to stay active, from paddling the waters of the Allegheny River to hiking at Point State Park or Phipps Concervatory. Bike trails wind throughout the city, and the famous Duquesne Incline offers one of the best cityscape views around.

4. Amenities

Active seniors having fun and relaxing in natureEverything you need, within easy reach. Whether it’s shopping, dining, healthcare, or services, it’s never more than a quick drive—or walk—away. Pittsburgh is home to twelve hospitals, many of which are nationally renowned, and enjoys a high number of doctors per capita, making it particularly ideal for aging residents.

5. Transportation

How will you get around in your retirement? Will you walk? Bike? Take the train? If you live in Pittsburgh, you’ll have options for all three easily at your fingertips! High walkability, plenty of bike trails, and a large mass transit system make traveling throughout the city a breeze. Pittsburgh is also home to a new International Airport, making top destinations worldwide just a few hours away.
